1st XV Report - Sat 7th March 2009 v Scunthorpe Print E-mail

Wellingborough 17 - 15 Scunthorpe

Wellingborough entertained second place Scunthorpe at a sunny Cut Throat Lane on Saturday.  They started under pressure from the kick off with both front row Keir Davidson and Adam Parker pulling out at the last minute and being replaced by Richard Goldsborough and the evergreen Mathew Birke stepping up to prop for the first time this SeasonInevitably Scunthope started the better scoring a penalty then a converted try.  Peter Vickers then kicked a penalty for the home side to make the score 3 - 10 at half time.

On the restart Peter Vickers charged through the Scunthope defence to score a try which he converted himself.  With the score now 10 - 10 Scunthorpe then piled on the pressure.  Wellingborough defended well but with 20 mins to go the Scunthope pack scored a try from a maul near the posts.  With the kicker missing the conversion it gave Wellingborough hope.  The score now remained at  10 - 15 until with 10 mins to go Wellingborough brought on Ben Grundy on the wing.   Peter Vickers kicked a high ball towards the winger who was on the end of the nicest of bounces to collect the ball at speed and score under the posts.  Peter Vickers duly converted to make the score now 17 - 15.  For the last 10 minutes Scunthope pilled on the pressure again only for the home side to defend with pride until the final whistle and send the large crowd of Wellingborough supporters home smiling.
