Wellingborough travelled to Newark at the weekend in what turned out to be close fought match. Borough arrived late due to a road closure after an accident so kick off was delayed by an hour. Borough started strongly and took the game to their hosts. Their pressure was rewarded with a penalty which Pete Vickers kicked to open the scoring 3-0. Both sides matched each other in all areas of the park, but the referee was blowing for penalties at every opportunity which disrupted the game. With half time approaching the Newark scrum half made a break from his own half and managed to off-load to his support player who then passed to the winger to score. Borough were left fuming as the referee missed 2 clear forward passes in the build up. But from the kick off they were given another penalty which Vickers again converted with the last kick of the half to make it 7-6 at the break to the Home side. Newark then started the second half the better and put Borough under a lot of pressure. After the ball was held up over the line for the fourth time the Newark number 8 finally found a way through to score. Indiscipline cost Borough points as the opposition winger kicked a couple of penalties. Vickers responded with his third penalty to make the score 20 – 9. Jason Minney then found himself sent to the sin bin after a professional foul and Newark made use of the extra man crossing for another score. With time running out Borough launched a good attack and were certain to score when a Newark player deliberately knocked the ball on and Borough were given a penalty try which Vickers converted. Unfortunately for the them this was the last score of the game as they just fell short of a good comeback. The final score 25-16 to Newark. Toby Johnson was impressive in his first game back and Mattie Sanders was causing trouble at every chance he got. In the backs Ben Heffernan was very impressive and combined well with Steven Gall, but it was Vickers who took the Man of the Match award after keeping Borough in the game with his boot. Vickers said after the game. “I’m very pleased with the performance from the lads today. We needed to put in a good performance after the disappointment of the last two weeks and they have done just that, they can pat themselves on the back this week. The game itself was a joy to be part of with both sides giving everything and I’d like to thank Newark for delaying the kick off for us and preparing their floodlights to make this possible.” |
