Scunthorpe 32 - 15 Wellingborough

Wellingborough travelled to top of the league Scunthorpe on Saturday and put in a brave performance to continue their good form.

Borough were forced to travel with a player short as they were unable to find enough players to make the long trip but this didn’t stop them from flying out the blocks. From the start they ran the ball well and snuffed out any attack that Scunthorpe launched. The pressure finally tolled when Pete Vickers charged down a kick and gathered to score in the corner. He was unable to convert from the touch line but good work from the forwards minutes later resulted in a penalty and Vickers added another 3 points for his team.

With Borough playing all the rugby in the first 20 minutes Scunthorpe struggled to take control of the game but then the heavens opened slowing the game down and the home side forwards were able to dominate rolling mauls. From a line out the ball was fed to the Scunthorpe backs and their centre scored through a well worked move however the referee failed to spot the forward pass in the build up.

Borough did not let this get them down and they continued to play good rugby with Vickers kicking Scunthorpe all over the park with some accurate kicks and Steven Gall and Jason Minney running well in the backs.

With half time approaching the home side kicked a penalty to go into the break 10-8 up.

The 2nd half started with Scunthorpe keeping the ball in the forwards and driving mauls to which the Borough forwards struggled to control. They soon scored another try which was converted and followed up by another penalty to lead 20-8. In recent weeks Borough have crumbled at this point but today they were determined to get back into the game. They put some good phases together with the pack winning good ball and the backs linking well together in attack to make yards. After several phases of the forwards picking and driving the ball was spun to the backs and Vickers ran a dummy move with Gall and Ben Heffernan and found enough space for himself to cross for his 2nd try and his conversion made the score 20-15 with ten minutes to play.

Unfortunately for Borough, Scunthorpe showed why they are top of the league and managed to finish the game with 2 further tries finally winning the game 32-15.

Pete Vickers said “I am so happy with the lads and their performance today. Last time we played Scunthorpe they put 70 points on us so it shows just how much we have improved these last few weeks. The commitment from some players in the lower teams was disappointing this week as some refused to travel so I thank all the players for their efforts today. I think both teams will agree the score does not reflect the game and we could have caused a major upset against top of the league.”
