Boro's losing streak continues
Week 9 and a trip to Leighton Buzzard
This week saw Boro travel to Leighton Buzzard, both teams were looking for a vital win to move away from the bottom 3. There were a number of changes this week, in the backs Tyler Chant moved back to 13 and Tom Mair started in the 10 shirt. In the forwards Adam Fuller started in the second row and Chris Shipman moved back to the No.8 position. On the bench it was all change with Ewan Pattison, Charlie Frankham and Luke Smith having splinters.
Both sides started the game needing to retain possession to make any headway and it was Boro's outside backs who made a couple of early breaks. The first score went to Leighton Buzzard who scored a penalty after some poor tackling (LB 3v0 Boro). Boro endeavoured to play the ball and keep it alive and some good hands in the backs saw Boro nearly score a try. The try inevitably came, this time the move came down the blindside, Ben Morton-Bright drew in the defence and passed the ball to Tom Mair who put winger Darryl Raynard into space, he went inside the defence and then outside and the inside again to score the try which was converted (LB 3v7 Boro).
Boro nearly scored a quick try but the box kick bounced tantalisingly over Kieran Checkley's hands, but Boro were soon given another chance with a penalty shot which was taken by Tom Mair (LB 3v10 Boro). Leighton Buzzard tried to get back into the game and were given a chance after Connor Riley was sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes, however, some strong set piece defence saw Boro clear their lines. Then it was Leighton Buzzard's turn to receive a yellow card and this time Boro took advantage extending their lead through a penalty from Tom Mair (LB 3v13 Boro). Boro kept attacking and a break from Tyler Chant saw Tom Bryan and Joe Staden take the ball on only for Andy Seaton to be bundled into touch. However, Boro were awarded a penalty but this was missed.
Buzzard were being a nuisance at the ruck and it took some strong defensive work from Joel Smith and then Darryl Raynard to thwart a Buzzard attack. With the half time whistle beckoning a loose offload saw Buzzard take full advantage to score an interception under the posts which was converted (LB 10v13 Boro). Boro still had enough time for another penalty shot which was pushed wide.
Half Time Score
Leighton Buzzard 10 v 13 Wellingborough
The second half started off with another one of Kieran Checkley's tackles and this was closely followed up by a try, some strong ruck work saw
Matt Ellson pounce on the ball, his pass was kicked through by Andy Seaton and then followed up by Tom Bryan who dribbled the ball on before diving on the ball to score the try which was again converted (LB 10v20 Boro). Boro were again awarded another penalty from some more positive play which unfortunately was missed. Leighton Buzzard took full advantage of this miss and scored a try of their own bringing themselves within 6 points of Boro (LB 17v20 Boro).
Boro soon answered back after some positive play scoring a penalty from over 40 yards (LB 17v23 Boro), but a loose mistake from the kick off saw Buzzard score yet another try, the conversion was missed but it was now a 1 point ball game (LB 22v23 Boro). Boro kept attacking and one attack saw them march down the blindside this was closely followed up by some strong scrummage and ruck work. Then the turning point of the match, a high tackle on Matt Ellson saw a fracas ensue and John Cartwright was sent off along with a Buzzard player, in addition Adam Fuller was sent to the bin for 10 mins. The penalty from the high tackle was put between the uprights extending Boro's slender lead (LB 22v26 Boro).
Both teams kept trying to offload the ball but the next score was from Buzzard, a number of missed tackles after a Buzzard lineout saw Buzzard take the lead with a try (LB 29v26 Boro). Buzzard were now finishing the stronger and another try from them saw Buzzard extend their lead further (LB 34v26 Boro), this was then followed up by yet another try as Boro's defence disappeared (LB 39v26 Boro)
Leighton Buzzard 39 v 26 Wellingborough
A game thrown away, after a good first half performance the second half turned into its polar opposite. The losing streak needs to stop and hopefully this Saturday's game will see Boro win.
