Poor start leads to defeat

Boro travelled to bottom side Peterborough in a resumption of the league campaign.

Although Peterborough were rooted to the bottom recently they had started to pick up some form so this was going to be a tough match.

Straight away from kick off Boro handed the advantage to Peterborough and 10 mins into the game Boro found themselves 12v0 down after some poor tackling led to two tries being scored through some strong attacking play from Peterborough.
This meant that for the remainder of the game Boro were left to play catch-up. A strong scrum performance from the Boro pack saw them rewarded with a series of penalties but Boro failed to take advantage. Boro saw plenty of ball and although half breaks were made the ball was either knocked on or the last pass was missed. Eventually, Boro made a break through Shaun Mackie, carried the ball towards the line and the quick thinking half backs flipped the ball for Steven Gall to race through to score a try. This was closely followed by a penalty and meant that Peterborough only led 12v8 at half time

The second half saw Peterborough immediately stretch their lead through a penalty. Boro weathered the initial storm as Tom Mair intercepted to put the team back on the attack. However, as seems to be the story of recent weeks the attack seemed to falter when in sight of the Peterborough try line through a combination of strong defence and poor execution with a couple of try scoring chances bombed. After Matt Ellson had left the pitch with a yellow card and then came back on again Boro were eventually rewarded for their positive play as Steven Gall released Luke Gardiner to race down the left hand side to score a try (even though the celebrating touch judge was interrogated by the referee for raising his flag in ecstasy!).

Straight from the kick off Peterborough were given a penalty, which was converted, after a poor attempt was made to collect the kick off. Boro tried to up their intensity and Pete Vickers looked like he had made a winning run to the try line but was held up short.

Final Score

Peterborough 18v13 Wellingborough

Scorers

Luke Gardiner 1 try
Pete Vickers 1 pen

Usually I have some kind of conclusion or witty repartee at the end but this week the players faces in the huddle at the end told the story. There was a realisation of disappointment as the lads knew that the opportunity for the win was passed up not through lack of effort but through application. The guys have worked extremely hard in the week on their drills but it currently doesn’t seem to be demonstrated on the pitch.

It’s fair to say that we are not suddenly a bad team but a good team short on confidence which comes when it starts to click and you start to win, which brings it nicely to Friday night’s game. This is a big game and we know it means a lot to the club and that’s why we, as players and coaching team ask that as many people as possible attend and provide as much noise and positive support as you can, invite your friends and make it a night for the club to remember and we will give everything on the pitch for that win!!
