The one that got away!

Week 7 and Boro visited Kettering in this years derby game!

This week saw Boro travel away to Kettering in a league and cup double header. Only one change to the starting pack with Joe Staden starting on the flank, in the backs Pete Vickers made his comeback from injury and started in the 10 shirt, Tom Bryan moved into the 12 shirt with Tyler Chant starting at 13. In the back three, Kieran Checkley moved to full back and Darryl Raynard started on the wing. On the bench Reece Parillon and Andy Seaton joined Joel Smith.

Two new reporters this week, your Club Captain John Crabtree and your Chairman George Shipman............so here is their attempt

The exchange referee looked a little worried about the light if the match was a draw and needed extra time for the cup, but both sides confident of playing for a win!

1st Half
Boro kicked off and had the majority of the possession with 3 penalties conceded in quick succession by Kettering. One penalty kick was missed and the 22 restart saw Kettering advance to the Boro 5m line. However, a good clearance kick by Pete Vickers and a timely tap tackle by Tyler Chant stopped the counter attack and Boro were awarded a penalty which was kicked to touch. There was some good defensive pressure in midfield from Tom Bryan and Joe Staden but the first quarter saw a number of turnovers by both sides.

Some strong running by Chris Shipman from scrum saw advantage for penalty, the drop kick was missed by PV but the penalty kick was converted and Boro opened the scoring (Kett 0v3 Boro). A scrum was won against the head by Kettering, and solid attack through midfield saw Kettering score a try which was converted (Kett 7v3 Boro). From the restart there was some solid running with forwards and backs linking well, the Kettering 9 was yellow carded for deliberate knock on in their 22 as Boro attacked. Boro elected for the scrum and from a planned move Kieran Checkley ran straight through the Kettering midfield and scored under posts, the try was converted and Boro retook the lead (Kett 7v10 Boro).

From the restart Kettering went on the attack and a penalty was awarded to Kettering for offside against Tom Bryan. The next set of phases from Kettering saw Will Bigley taking a team yellow card after a number of penalties. The pressure by Kettering in the Boro 22 was well managed by Boro’s 14 players, albeit at the cost of 2 penalties, Matt Ellson was then given a yellow for lazy running and Boro were down to 13 just as Kettering were back to a full 15. A knock-on at a 5m Kettering lineout signalled the end of the first half.

2nd Half
The second half saw Kettering restart with Boro attacking with their backs to the clubhouse. Some strong running, from Reece Parillion and others set the tone of the second half but a knock-on saw the ball turned over to Kettering. Following some good pressure in attack, a penalty awarded was awarded to Boro but the kick was missed by Pete Vickers. A period of scrappy play by both sides saw another Kettering offside and Boro earned a lineout from the penalty kick. Kettering won the lineout and kicked it into the Boro 22, Connor Riley was penalised for lying on the ball in touch underneath two Kettering players, the Kettering lineout followed with catch and drive for a try which was converted (Kett 14v10 Boro).

A positive restart from Boro and the subsequent pressure saw Kettering penalised for going off their feet at the ruck. A lineout followed and another miss move in midfield saw Steven Gall go through the middle and score under the posts, with the kick being converted (Kett 14-17 Boro). Kettering soon answered back and from a lineout, caught and drove over from 5m for another try, although the conversion was pushed wide (Kett 19-17 Boro). Again Boro then retook the lead this time through a penalty kicked by Pete Vickers (Kett 19v20 Boro).

A pick and drive by the Boro forwards contained Kettering as the ref called last play, with players committed to rucks the only option was to put the ball long downfield. However, the kick was fielded on halfway by Kettering and after the 4th phase it was slung back to the Kettering full back who drilled the drop goal from 45m to take the score to 22-20.

Full Time Score
Kettering 22 v 20 Wellingborough

An excellent game for neutrals saw Kettering take the spoils. A huge improvement on last weeks game but the players were downhearted knowing that but for the drop gaol at the death, that was a game won.
