U17's Look Strong Against Long Buckby
Dry but windy day at Cut Throat Lane today, great support from parents and a good performance from the lads.
After watching a poor warm-up expectations for the game were not high, however after a few harsh words in the changing rooms the players came out focused and ready for the game ahead.
The game started and Wellingborough took the game to Long Buckby despite playing up the hill and against the wind Wellingborough were camped in the Long Buckby half for good periods of the first half but lack a of composure in the final third and some excellent defence from Long Buckby prevented us from capitalising on the possession we had. The breakthrough came from a quick penalty on the Long Buckby 5m line the ball went down the line with Jordan Crookes crossing to score in the corner. The game became a little scrappy before Wellingborough strung another backs move together with the introduction of James Maher into the line from fullback to make the overlap which he exploited to go over and score Wellingborough's second. Long Buckby came straight back at Wellingborough with a sustained period of pressure of their own just before half time with missed tackles in midfield allowing them in to score under the posts with the last play of the half, Long Buckby converted their try, Wellingborough missed both it's conversions to go in the break 10 - 7.
Wellingborough with the wind behind them controlled the second half with Thomas Cullen pulling the strings from flyhallf constantly turning the Long Buckby defence with good kicking from hand or releasing the backs. Wellingborough scored again with a great run from CENTRE Connor Riley who was tackled just short of the line but had the piece of mind to place the ball back for the supporting Connor Gordon to pick up and drive over the line to score, conversion was missed by James Maher. Long Buckby came straight back with a breakaway try of their own but also missed the conversion, Wellingborough regrouped and camped again in the Long Buckby half with Thomas Cullen spotting the gap to go over under the posts, he converted his own kick. We then had a cameo appearance from joseph Barltrop who charged through the Long Buckby defence on two occasions and once in the clear sprinted like Linford Christy away from his fellow forwards only to be stopped short by the covering fullback a great sight to see throughly enjoyed by the Wellingborough Supporters. Wellingborough scored the last try with a lineout on the Long Buckby line, the ball was gathered and set for the drive, with backs running from all corners of the pitch to join the drive the Long Buckby defence was pushed back over the line to allow Thomas Cullen to flop over the line to score the try. Note to forwards do not give the backs the ball in a driving maul as they will only take the credit for all your hard work. Thomas missed the conversion under pressure from the sideline. Final Score 27 - 12.
Forward of the Match : Billy Hyman a constant nuisance to Long Buckby, great energy around the park and tackled everything in sight.
Back of the Match : Thomas Cullen with a brace of tries and pulled the strings all days with some excellent kicking from hand and great distribution to the backs.
The decision for Man of the Match was very difficult with everyone having a really good game today, lets take this forward with some good training this week in preparation for Oundle next Sunday.
