Home Win For U17's
Horrible is the only way to describe the weather today, cold wet and miserable. A really big thank you to players and parents that turned out today.
Wellingborough renewed the battle with Kettering on a typical winters day in Wellingborough.
A training match of three thirds of 25 minutes.
The weather dictated it was going to be a scrappy game and so it proved, with the ball like a piece of soap and that mixed with cold hands meant that there was a lot of errors and scrums were the order of the day. The Wellingborough pack started better winning a couple of scrums against the head. Despite Wellingborough having the majority of the field position for the first third we were not clinical enough to capitalise upon the territory and the Kettering defence held firm and strong.
First Third 0-0
Second third the coaches made changes and yet the teams performance was not affected and the forwards battled for the possession and after five minutes Wellingborough got the upper hand to allow Thomas Cullen to break through and score, conversion was missed by Zach Bean the game then ebbed and flowed with the defences holding strong. Kettering infringed in front of the posts and Wellingborough opted for the kick which was slotted over by Zach Bean.
Second Third 8-0
Third third with further changes and both our scrum halves having to depart Wellingborough had to dig deep to keep Kettering at bay although it could have all been different if joseph Barltrop had held on to a fantastic take and charge from the start but the ball went forward in collision. Kettering came back and tested the Wellingborough defence which held firm until the end of the game when Kettering broke through to score in the corner which was fantastically converted with the aid of the cross bar.
Final Score 8-7
Moment of the match Thomas Cullen obviously taking tips from Rhys Fereday from last week and the Saints JJ Hanrahan from Friday to kick the ball dead from the oppositions twenty-two. That's three I have seen in two weeks lets hope we don't see it again this season.
Forwards of the Match - Dan Sims excellent tackling and running with the ball. fin Green caused the Kettering scrum problems and excellent in the the rucks and mauls.
Back of the Match - Zach Bean always looked a threat and don't think he missed a tackle. Reece Fowler good straight running on the wing and making good distance every time he got the ball also stepped up in defence.
An excellent performance from the whole team today well done everyone and roll on the next games.
