Boro stuggle for form with loss at home
Game 22 and the visit of 3rd placed ONs
This week saw the visit of promotion chasing Old Northamptonians in a game under the lights on Friday. There was only one change to the starting XV with Steven Gall starting on the wing. On the bench, there were two changes with Andy Fordham and Rhys Fereday getting splinters.
Boro started off down the hill and straight from the kick off they were on the front foot. Some good play from Chris Shipman and Joel Smith saw Boro spoil the ball for ONs, then from the resultant scrum a well placed kick from Pete Vickers was followed up by an equally good chase from Kieran Checkley who caught an ONs player under pressure on his own line. Boro were quick to turn the ball over as they drove ONs off the ball at a scrum, Chris Shipman picked the ball up to trundle down the left hand side before passing to Pete Vickers who dived over the line to give Boro an early lead, the conversion was also scored (Boro 7v0 ONs).
From the kick off Boro were straight back into the ONs half, this time a wide move saw Boro make some yards before another well placed kick saw Kieran Checkley race after a kick only to be thwarted by the covering defence. Eventually a penalty saw ONs escape their own half and then it their turn to attack Boro but some good scramble defence prevented any score. Further strong tackling from JC and Dan Pateman saw ONs prevented from making any progress. Boro regained the ball but couldn't find that second score, one break saw Andy Seaton identify space on the blindside but his chip was fielded by his opposite number. For all the good play composure was needed for Boro to extend their lead.
Then it was ONs turn to have the ball, this time a series of penalties saw ONs make progress only this time some good scrummaging saw Boro relieve their lines. ONs came back but some strong line defence from Dan Pateman, Joel Smith and Tom Bryan prevented the score. This was only temporary as ONs stretched the play and found space out wide to score in the left hand corner (Boro 7v5 ONs). Discipline at rucks was now proving to be a problem and ONs used this to put Boro under further pressure in their own half, and after one too many errors ONs scored from a set piece to give them the lead (Boro 7v12 ONs), the half time whistle blew with Boro defending their line.

Wellingborough 7 v 12 Old Northamptonians
The second half started as the first half ended with ONs pinning back Boro in their own 22, some good tactical kicking saw Boro unable to escape and eventually some more good work from ONs saw them extend their lead with a try in the corner (Boro 7v17 ONs).
Boro couldn't escape the stranglehold that ONs had over them, and some indiscipline saw ONs put Boro back in to their own 22, this time there was space on the blindside which ONs exploited to score a try (Boro 7v24 ONs). The first 15 mins of the half had seen Boro starved of possession but finally they saw some ball after another strong scrum. This time the ball was kept with rucks being cleaned out allowing Pete Vickers and Andy Seaton to marshal the team around, finally the space opened up and Tom Bryan shot through a gap in the defence to score a well worked try (Boro 12v24 ONs).
However, Boro's Achilles heel of stupid penalties saw ONs answer back, this time the ball was kicked into the corner and some strong ONs forward play saw them score a try (Boro 12v31 ONs). Boro tried to get themselves back into the game but a good break from Pete Vickers came to no avail, a loose kick from Boro as they tried to make progress was punished with ONs running it back to score another try (Boro 12v38).
With the half coming to a close Boro managed to get some good possession and keep the ball after some strong wide defence prevented ONs from scoring, however, it was ONs who had the final word of the game with a try of their own after a missed tackle (Boro 12v45).
