Wellingborough Vs Peterborough

A brace of Mackies wins the game

Wellingborough hosted Peterborough this week in a game which Wellingborough needed to win to maintain their spot in the top three of the table.

1st Half

Peterborough kicked off with Boro attacking up the hill…… wait a moment, the match ball was forgotten so there was a slight delay as the doors were ripped off a cupboard so that a ball could be found. The delay seemed to suit Peterborough more than Boro as an early attack saw the Peterborough back line make a break through the Boro defence to score an early try (Boro 0v5 Peterborough).
Boro soon responded after some positive play which saw a penalty awarded and then converted by Pete Vickers (Boro 3v5 Peterborough). It wasn’t long before Boro were back on the attack, this time the forwards carried the ball towards the Peterborough line and then with space opening out wide the ball was flung to Ryan Mackie who dotted down in the corner to give Boro the lead (Boro 8v5 Peterborough).

With the backs and forwards interlinking well, Boro soon advanced towards the Peterborough line; a half break by Pete Vickers saw Shaun Mackie in close proximity to gather in the offload and score the try which was then converted (Boro 15v5 Peterborough). Straight from the kick off Boro made quick progress into the Peterborough half, one too many indiscretions saw Boro awarded a penalty which was converted to extend the Boro lead (Boro 18v5 Peterborough).

Peterborough soon replied as sloppy defence from Boro saw a try conceded (Boro 18v10 Peterborough), the rest of the half saw Boro play for territory to good effect but strong Peterborough defence saw no remaining scores in the half.

2nd Half
Peterborough started the half on the attack and it took some great defence to prevent them scoring. The opening moments of the second half saw scrappy play from both sides as both were determined to get the next score. A break from Chris Shipman wasn’t rewarded with a try but a penalty was awarded and Pete Vickers stepped up to slot the ball over (Boro 21v10 Peterborough).
Boro started to gain some momentum and more of a foothold on the game, some ferocious defence saw Boro turn the ball over and a period of sustained pressure saw another penalty opportunity which was duly converted to extend the Boro lead (Boro 24v10 Peterborough).

Then the ‘moment of the match’ occurred, Darrell Raynard broke down the right wing and attempted to chip the covering defence but managed to throw the ball too far ahead of himself so managed to kick thin air.

The final moments of the match saw Boro attack from their own 22 with Pete Vickers breaking free of the defence to put Ethan Roberts into space, the covering defence managed to scramble across but were penalised. With no time left the penalty was tapped and Chris Shipman drove towards the line only to be held up, scrum half Kieran Fereday managed to recover the ball and squeeze over for the try and the victory.

Final Score
Wellingborough 29 v 10 Peterborough
Ryan Mackie 1 try
Shaun Mackie 1 try
Keiran Fereday 1 try
Pete Vickers 4 pens, 1 con

A much better performance from the entire team saw Boro come out victorious; sticking to the game plan meant that Boro could put together some sustained pressure in attack which was rewarded with 29 points. Next week sees a Friday night fixture with Boro travelling to Market Harborough, this is usually a tough encounter but an entertaining match.
