Boro finish 2nd after battle at Biggleswade

Training finished – check! ET preview written – check! Team selected – check! Everyone available – check and double check! Game on.

Boro travelled to Biggleswade looking for the victory to take 2nd spot and the chance of promotion via a play-off. Biggleswade level on points with Boro were aiming to achieve the same but with home advantage in this fixture.

1st Half
Boro kicked off with the wind at their backs and straight away the Biggleswade fly half pinned Boro back in their half. It wasn’t long before Boro infringed at the ruck and the Biggleswade 10 slotted the points (Biggs 3v0 Boro). All the early possession seemed to be with Biggleswade as Boro struggled to get off their own half and another penalty saw Biggleswade extend their lead (Biggs 6v0 Boro).

The next kick off saw Boro get some ball and progress up to halfway, a series of half breaks by Boro weren’t rewarded as either the ball was knocked on or the final pass was forced. One break saw Ryan Mackie shoot down the blindside and put Tom Mair into space who made it into the Biggleswade 22, a series of phases in the Biggleswade 22 saw Kieran Fereday take the ball on further before the ball was passed left, Ryan Mackie stepped through a gap in the defence before offloading to Paul Lambert who barrelled over the line for the opening try (Biggs 6v5 Boro).

Boro now started to use the ball and keep hold of it but still that final pass and offload wasn’t sticking. Biggleswade then took advantage of some errant Boro play but some strong defence saw Boro scramble back and prevent the try, however the pressure soon took its toll and a penalty was awarded to Biggleswade which was slotted over to extend their lead (Biggs 9v5 Boro).

Boro were fighting against a strong wind so any penalty in their own half had to be tapped, one tapped penalty saw Steven Gall make a break but again Boro couldn’t take advantage as the wrong option wasn’t chosen. If a brief summary was going to be written then it would be that Boro showed a lot of effort but too many wrong options were being taken at the wrong time.

Half Time Score
Biggleswade 9 v 5 Wellingborough

2nd Half
With the wind at their backs Boro now needed to take advantage by pinning back Biggleswade, and from the kick off Shaun Mackie leapt to give Boro the ball although Matt Ellson tried an up-n-under straight after. Boro needed an early score and it wasn’t long before it came, a break by Ryan Mackie down the right which was closely followed by breaks from Kieran Fereday saw Boro make inroads into the 22. A break left saw Adam Lambert nearly make it to the line, the ball was quickly swung right and Pete Vickers spotted a marauding Andy Fordham on his shoulder who crashed through the Biggleswade defence and over the line, Pete Vickers converted the try off the post to give Boro the lead (Biggs 9v12 Boro).

Biggleswade soon gathered possession of the ball but strong and resolute defence saw Boro back on the attack. The game to’d and fro’d and Biggleswade were awarded a penalty which was kicked into the corner, however, Chris Shipman leapt like a salmon to steal the ball. However, Biggleswade kept coming back on the attack and again strong defence kept them at bay with one turnover seeing Steven Gall make a break of 50 yards.

Back came Biggleswade and this time a couple of missed tackles allowed the Biggleswade centre to step through the Boro defence to score under the posts, however quick thinking from Ryan Mackie saw the conversion charged down (Biggs 14v12 Boro).

The kick off saw Craig Marshall collect but with the ball stuck in a ruck a scrum was awarded to Boro. From the scrum the ball was fed wide and Steven Gall stepped through the Biggleswade defence to take Boro within touching distance of the line. A couple of quick phases later saw a wide pass left and Matt Ellson collect the ball to score the try (Biggs 14v17).

With the game drawing to a close Boro needed to dig deep as Biggleswade attacked from deep after a Pete Vickers kick had pinned them back into their 22. Joel Smith won a turnover at a ruck but the final moments saw some strong defence again as Boro held on for the win.

Final Score
Biggleswade 14 v 17 Wellingborough

Paul Lambert 1 try
Andy Fordham 1 try
Matt Ellson 1 try
Pete Vickers 1 con

The last league game of the season and a win but most importantly a deserved second place in what is a very tough league. This performance showed the dogged nature of this team and although chances to show off some flair were few the team dug deep and deservedly won the game.

With the 2nd place comes the extra play-off game and a chance for promotion, details will be put on the website when confirmed but as with this week your support would be welcome!
