Old Leamingtonians - Sunday 8th November 2015
Great Attitudes and Commitment in Tough Match
Turning up to play against Old Leamingtonians, the Wellingborough Ladies, despite having a heavily depleted side, were looking forward to both the challenge and the opportunity it provided for more game time for many of their less experienced players.
The attitudes of the away side and the determination not to let their heads drop, was incredible. The commitment of all players showed in the willingness to put their bodies on the line in tackle after tackle and ruck after ruck. Starting the game with 14 players, the discipline in the defensive line had to be spot on, and although marked improvement was seen throughout the match, the home side managed to break through the defence on quite a few occasions. Wellingborough had a short period with 15 players on the pitch, which looked to even up the game a little, until an amazing run by prop, Karen Stafford, ended in a tackle which resulted in her leaving the pitch with a shoulder injury. Captain and number 8, Rachel King, stepped up to tight-head prop and the match continued with several longer periods of play in which the Old Leamingtonians struggled to score. The Wellingborough lineout and scrum remained strong with lots of ball stolen, and the back line, many of which were playing out of position, worked hard to make tackle after tackle.
Although the score line is disappointing after the team’s recent success, it is exciting to see new player development, a key part of building the future of the ladies side.
