Kettering festival runners up
Very strong U8's performances impress and become runners up at the Kettering Festival.
Today, WRFC under 8's bared their teeth at the Kettering Festival. The lads played with total commitment and there was some awesome rugby on display.
The pool games were all approached with determination and won with some great rugby on show to ensure our passage through to the semi finals. Throughout the tournament, the lads scored 31 try's and every player crossed the try line a number of times. It wasn't easy though and the teams that they played didn't come to lose. The difference was our dominance in defence as a number of our players were on fire, taking tag after tag after tag. When we had the ball in our hands, the passing was accurate and the support play never faultered.
Then, the real drama started. Semi finals against old Northamptonians. We quickly realised that this was a very organised unit and knew their way around the pitch. At half time we were 3 try's to one down. The lads weren't ready to go home yet and they dug deep to play some astounding rugby against a very strong side. The last play of the game saw Wellingborough draw level at 4 each and it was decided that golden try would settle it. We celebrated with the try but it dwas controvertially decided that a foot was in touch and ON's went on to score the winning try. Our lads were devastated.
All was about to change though. It was decided thatgolden try should not have been the way that the place for the final was decided. Wellingborough were awarded a draw and went through to the final on a stronger try tally.
We met Old Scouts in the final and it was a game that we knew we had a chance of winning. In the end though, the drama of the semi final caught up with us and we finished as runners up. Congratulations to Old Scouts, who are a very good side and kept their heads and played solid rugby.
We gained great acclaim from opposing team coaches and parents who were highly impressed with our lads. For me, it was our commitment and will to win that was the most impressive. Yes, we played fantastic rugby today, but none of the lads wanted to let each other down and every kid out there passionately wanted to win. The coaches/manager/parents would like to say "three cheers for Wellingborough".
Well done lads. You're incredible.
There's more to come too as there is another Wellingborough team making great strides and will be competing very soon. Keep it up kids.
