Wellingborough 20 - 5 Dunstablians

Wellingborough overcame the disappointment of last weekend's loss by beating Dunstable at Cut Throat Lane.

The home side started strongly and took early control of the game with the forwards and backs combining well. They opened the scoring with a penalty from Pete Vickers. Minutes later the forwards gave their backs the platform they needed and the ball was fed through the hands to Steven Gall who made a nice break before off-loading to Jason Minney to score. Vickers added the extras.

Dunstable made a counter attack into the Borough half for the first time and were rewarded when Minney was beaten by his opposite man who scored bringing the visitors back into the game. Borough had the final word of the half with Vickers kicking another fine penalty to make the half time score 13-5.

The second half began with Borough again taking full control of the game. The forwards were dominating the set pieces and the Dunstable backs were unable to penetrate the home sides back line, Ben Heffernan leading the way with hit after hit.

Dunstable came back again and launched a couple of good attacks in the Borough 22m. The hosts were forced to keep out each wave of attack and soon turned the ball over to relieve the pressure.

From a line out the ball was spun out wide and Steven Gall spotted a big gap which he chipped into and gathered his kick to score under the posts, Vickers added the conversion.

Borough had a few more good attacks but were unable to finish them off and the game ended 20-5 to Borough.

Pete Vickers said “I was pleased with performance from the guys today, we definitely made amends for last week. The forwards and backs worked really well together and we played a really structured game. The set pieces were excellent and our defence was fantastic. The 2 points gives us a bit more of a cushion and we feel confident of staying in this league.”

Man of the match: Ben Heffernan
