Derby draw!

By Martin Plowman

Local derby swings both ways!

Saturdays most important match of the day kicked off a Cut Throat Lane at 2pm as Wellingborough Colts entertained Wellingborough Old Grammarians Colts. It was cold, breezy with rain in the air (Shock horror!)
OG's started the brighter of the two sides despite losing George Watkinson in almost the first collison of the day. They went on to score two unconverted tries before Boro lost influential open side Connor Gordon and Scrum half Jake Samwell. This allowed Morgan Skett to make his third appearance of the season and Harry Shipman entered fray at scrum half. At this point Boro got into their stride and possibly played their best rugby of the season for the next 20 minutes or so as the backs broke the line time and time again, the forwards made in roads in to the defence and the quick ball for the likes of Josh Anderson and Ben Plowman meant tries came from both centres and prop Ewan Grimshaw also crashed over as Boro scored three tries, one converted by James Maher.
Just before half time the OG's managed to get on the score sheet but lost another player to a nasty jaw injury and we hope he recovers well.
Lewis Aitken from the U16's made his debut from the bench as Boro went hunting the win with the wind now at their backs another try was scored out wide by Josh White as Boro led 22-17. Boro then lost Ben Plowman and Harry Shipman to injury meaning a total reshuffle in the backs for the final 10 mins (Back line shirt numbers were 10,12, 8, 3 11, 15,14!) Forwards have to be versatile chaps these days! Boro ended up conceding a try to make it 22-22 and had to dig deep to prevent any further scores.
This game could have gone either way and it was fantastic to watch 30 or so young men go about their sport with enthusiasm, discipline and every ounce of energy and strength they had.
A final word to the referee, he had a fantastic game, this was a local derby between two sets of teams that have known each other a long time, some go to school or college together, some have played together before and no one wanted to give an inch so the management of the game and players was always going to be important and the ref got it spot on, thank you Sir!!
