2nd XV Report - Sat 5th Sept 2009 v Derby (A) Print E-mail

Derby 29 - 10 Wellingborough

Wellingborough 2nds arrived at Haslam’s Lane Derby with a fifteen man squad, some of whom had only been contacted earlier in the day due to injuries elsewhere in the Club. They faced a well drilled home side with at least six substitutes and a Coaching Team. It was going to be a warm and difficult afternoon.

For the first twenty five minutes of the game it was even with both teams attacking and losing the ball in the final quarter and failing to score, the game could have gone either way.

On the twenty fifth minute the home team scored a well worked try wide out on the right and converted. Three minutes later a similar try also converted.

On the thirty minute mark an excellent try from “Dom” (sorry no more detail) with lots of good Boro inter play resulting in him rounding their defence and scoring under the posts. Jack Bryan converting the try.

The home team scored another try before the half time whistle which was not converted and left them leading 19 – 7 at the break.

At half time Boro had to change three players from forward positions, hooker, second row and flanker due to injury, all continued to their credit as full back, winger and centre.

Two minutes into the second half after much pressure from Boro forwards a penalty was awarded and converted by Jack Bryan.

Despite numerous changes the home side only breached the dogged Boro defence on two more occasions with no conversions. A creditable 29 – 10 defeat for the 2nds who can all hold their heads up for never giving up and not giving in to some dubious home team tactics.
