Colts exit East Mids Cup

By Martin Plowman

Heart, desire, attitude but another defeat!

Boro's Colts travelled West to Banbury for the first round of the East Mids Cup, oddly there was only one other game in this round as other sides start in round 2 (I wonder how many of those fixtures will be completed!) The 2pm kick off seemed to catch Boro cold as errors were made early on, the conditions meant all Banbury had to show were 3 points from the tee. Boro then had opportunities but struggled at scrum time for once as a new second row paring of Fin Green and Ben Cox warmed to their task.
Banbury then scored a try and converted it to lead 10-0. Banbury's bigger pack started getting some front foot ball and as half time approached a fantastic last ditch tackle from Josh Anderson prevented a certain try and as the ball was recycled it was captain Ben Plowman that some how stopped the large inside centre right on the try line as the ref blew for half time.
Boro knew they had to score next and unfortunately this wasnt the case as Banbury scored another 7 pointer. This then led to Boro's best spell of the match as first Ben Plowman raced in from 50 metres, try converted by Josh Anderson. Banbury scored an unconverted try before Anderson himself raced away to make the score 22-12. Boro continued to hammer away at the Banbury line and the result may have been different had two disallowed tries from Billy Hyman and Ewan Grimshaw counted. There was still time for Boro to work the ball to the corner and as Austin Coleman dived for the corner a fantastic cover tackle stopped him from grounding the ball. Banbury then broke away to score another converted try and secure the win.
Boro showed great heart, desire and excellent attitude but once again were on the wrong side of the result. We need to work on playing for longer spells, concentration and intensity as we concede very easy tries far too often, the base is there.. we just need to build on top of that.
Our back row were excellent hence George Crisp and Billy Hyman sharing the MuMu Man of the match award but other mentions have to go to Harry Gayton, Finn Green and Ben Cox for playing out of position, our try scoring centres for nullifying much larger opposition and our U16's James Batten, Harry Shipman, Owen Kier (congratulations on your Colts debut) and Austin Coleman.
